Markyate is on Watling Street, the Roman road (now the A5). Once a major travellers hub, at one point having over forty inns and public houses along its main road. It was an early site for Pickfords transport service. The River Ver has occasionally flooded the centre of the village. A notorious resident, Lady Katherine Ferrers known as ‘The Wicked Lady’ was repressed by a bullying and overbearing husband. She rebelled by dressing as a man and ventured out at night to become a highway robber. Rumour has it she can still be seen riding across the fields.
